The Ultimate Checklist for Filing Your ITR This Year (Don’t Miss a Thing!)

itr filing documents checklist india.

Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) often feels like solving a puzzle where the pieces are hidden in different drawers, email folders, and bank portals. You sit down to file, only to realise you’re missing a certificate or forgot the password to your Form 26AS.

The difference between a stressful tax season and a smooth one is simple: Preparation.

At Bharatiya Tax Pro, we have handled thousands of returns over the last 40 years. We’ve seen that 90% of delays stem from a single crucial document being missing. To help you breeze through this season, we’ve compiled the ultimate checklist of documents you need before you log in to the tax portal.

1. The Basics (Identity & Access)

Before diving into the numbers, ensure your access is sorted.

  • PAN Card & Aadhaar Card: Ensure they are linked! If they aren’t, your PAN might be inoperative, leading to higher TDS and inability to file.
  • Income Tax Portal Login: Check if your password works. If it’s expired, reset it now rather than on the due date.
  • Bank Account Details: You will need the account number and IFSC code for all your active bank accounts, not just the salary account. Pick one for the refund credit.

2. For Salaried Employees

  • Form 16: This is your holy grail. Issued by your employer, it details your salary and TDS deducted. If you changed jobs during the year, ensure you get Form 16 from both employers.
  • Form 12BB: A copy of your investment declaration submitted to your HR. This helps cross-verify if all your deductions were actually considered.

3. Income from Investments & Capital Gains

This is where most people get notices for “under-reporting income.”

  • Interest Certificates: Download these from your Net Banking for Savings Accounts (Section 80TTA/TTB deduction) and Fixed Deposits (FDs). Don’t rely on SMS alerts alone.
  • Capital Gains Statement: If you sold mutual funds or shares, ask your broker (Zerodha, Groww, ICICI Direct, etc.) for a “Tax P&L” or “Capital Gains Report” for the financial year.
  • Dividend Income: Check your bank statement for dividend credits. These are fully taxable now.

4. Property & Home Loans

  • Home Loan Statement: You need the split between Principal (claimed under 80C) and Interest (claimed under Section 24).
  • Rental Income details: If you have let out a property, you need the tenant’s details (PAN is mandatory if rent > Rs. 1 Lakh/year) and the total rent received.

5. Tax Saving Proofs (Section 80C & Beyond)

If you missed submitting these to your HR, you can still claim them when you file!

  • Life Insurance Premium Receipts (LIC, etc.)
  • PPF Passbook (showing deposits made during the year)
  • ELSS Mutual Fund Statements
  • Tuition Fee Receipts (for children’s education)
  • Health Insurance Receipts (Section 80D): For yourself and parents. Note: “Preventive Health Checkup” bills (up to Rs. 5,000) can also be claimed here.

6. The “Hidden” Validators (Crucial Step!)

Never file your return without cross-checking these two government documents available on the portal:

  • Form 26AS: This is your tax passbook. It shows all taxes deducted (TDS) against your PAN. If a deduction is missing here, you won’t get credit for it.
  • AIS (Annual Information Statement): The new, detailed report. It tracks high-value transactions, share trading, and even savings Interest. Pro Tip: If the AIS shows income you didn’t earn, you must flag it immediately on the portal.

Why You Shouldn’t Do It Alone

Even with a checklist, interpreting these documents can be tricky. Is that FD Interest taxable? Which regime saves me more tax this year based on these proofs?

That is where we come in.

Bharatiya Tax Pro takes this checklist off your hands. You upload the documents, and our experts—backed by four decades of trust—ensure every rupee is accounted for and every eligible deduction is claimed.
